AN EPIC AND UNPARALLELED PROJECT

At the highest point of Gramado, a project is born that redefines contemporary luxury with deep roots in the history and landscape of the region. W Residences Gramado is the union of four pillars: sensory architecture, regenerative landscaping, international wellness, and cultural authenticity.

All of this is guided by a team of experts who have translated the essence of the W brand to one of Brazil’s most desirable destinations.

ARCHITECTURE THAT EMBRACES THE LANDSCAPE, OFFERING CONTEMPLATION AND SENSORY EXPERIENCES, BY GUI MATTOS.

The meeting between W Gramado and the São Paulo-based firm Gui Mattos sought to promote a unique experience and synergy, combining the reinterpretation of local architecture with a reference to the affective memory of the culture, customs, and cuisine of Rio Grande do Sul in a simple yet sophisticated manner.

Seeking a direct connection with the preserved native forest, the project proposes spaces that embrace the landscape, offering moments of contemplation and calm, while at the same time turning inward through intimate environments, reinforced by the architecture and the search for cozy and sensory materials.

“We brought references—through materiality, atmosphere—of everything that existed in Gramado in the past. We have crystals, environments that resemble ancient caves. We have vegetation, references to waterfalls. All of this is embedded in the context that W has brought us as its essence: having a clear purpose to establish and strengthen our presence in Gramado.”
– Gui Mattos

THE ENCOUNTER BETWEEN THE SENSORY AND THE CONTEMPORARY

A project that would bring a reinterpretation of the traditional architecture of the first Italian settlers who inhabited Gramado, mixed with the modernity that the W brand demands.

This was the briefing and challenge for architect Gui Mattos. Undoubtedly a challenging mission, but one worthy of a disruptive firm like Gui Mattos.

INTEGRATING VEGETATION AND NATIVE FOREST PRESERVATION

A botanist and landscape architect, he holds a master’s degree in Botany from the University of São Paulo and is director of Cardim Arquitetura Paisagística. In 2021, he received the Muriqui, one of the country’s leading environmental awards, granted by RBMA-UNESCO. He also received the Anchieta Medal and the Diploma of Gratitude from the City of São Paulo from the City Council for the discovery of surviving Cerrado areas in the urban network. He was a columnist for seven years at Rádio Estadão and from 2013 to 2014 at Rede Globo. He was curator of the long-term exhibitions at the Museu da Casa Brasileira (Brazilian House Museum) “A Casa e a Cidade” (The House and the City) and “Remanescentes da Mata Atlântica & Acervo MCB” (Remnants of the Atlantic Forest & MCB Collection).

These are some of the credentials of excellence of landscape architect Ricardo Cardim, who was chosen for the project due to his know-how of natural landscaping, which integrates buildings with native vegetation.

The project will include the removal of exotic and invasive species (pine and eucalyptus) for the planting of native vegetation of the region, such as araucarias, preserving the existing massifs so that W Gramado is integrated with the native vegetation, with its xaxins and araucarias, like its neighbor, Parque das Orquídeas.

“It is landscaping that respects the ancient vegetation existing in this territory. So that we can continue with the best possible ecological balance, respecting the fauna and flora of the region, and so that people can be enchanted by the beauty of the plants that make up that unique landscape.”

THE ESSENCE OF INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY DESIGN FOR W GRAMADO

Responsible for the hospitality design concept at W Gramado, Jessica Lianza is CEO of the consulting firm OARA, working on high-end projects in Brazil and abroad, focusing on sensory design, local authenticity, and excellence in the user journey. She specializes in creating hospitality experiences that combine aesthetics, strategy, and well-being.

Inspired by high-altitude landscapes around the world—such as Le Fay in the Dolomites and the Experimental Chalet in Verbier—Jessica translated the global DNA of the W brand into a proposal rooted in Brazilian territory: vibrant, tropical, and southern.
For her, W Gramado represents a gentle intensity, a balance between energy and warmth, presence and surprise, architecture and emotion.

Based on a deep immersion in Gramado, the project developed by Jessica and her team proposes a unique design narrative that guides everything from the façade to the products sold in the store. Everything was designed to integrate sensoriality, efficiency, local culture, and brand strength—the four essential pillars that underpin the W Residences experience in Gramado.

“At W Residences Gramado, we worked with these elements in an orchestrated way: light, materiality, art, even acoustics, the way guests move through space. The goal is to create a living narrative where the senses connect the body to memory.”
– Jessica Lianza
